Andrea leads the Mayor’s Fitness Council Executive Committee, subcommittees, and task force groups that all share the mission of a healthier and more active San Antonio. Andrea gives back to the community by serving on national and community coalitions and work groups throughout the San Antonio area.

Designing Healthier Cities: How Local Fitness Councils Are Shaping Active Communities

As cities rethink how communities live, move, and gather, public policy is playing a growing role in shaping environments that support health and well-being. From activating public spaces to modernizing safety regulations for emerging wellness experiences, local leaders are increasingly tasked with balancing innovation, access, and public protection. This session explores how cross-sector collaboration—between city officials, public health leaders, and the fitness industry—can influence the design of healthier communities. Through examples from San Antonio’s Mayor’s Fitness Council and California’s evolving regulatory discussions around cold spa operations, panelists will share how local policy frameworks can both enable new wellness opportunities and ensure they are implemented safely and responsibly. Attendees will gain insight into how civic leaders and industry advocates can work together to create policies that expand access to movement, improve community health, and support innovation in the wellness economy.
