Chuck Runyon is co-founder and co-chair of the Purpose Brands, LLC board of directors. As CEO of Self Esteem Brands, Runyon helped steer its 2024 merger with Orangetheory Fitness. The merger created Purpose Brands and the largest and most trusted portfolio of fitness, nutrition and wellness franchise and services brands: Orangetheory Fitness, Anytime Fitness, Waxing the City, The Bar Method, Basecamp Fitness/SUMHIIT Fitness, Stronger U Nutrition, Healthy Contributions, and Provision Security. Purpose Brands generates a combined $3.7 billion in revenue, operates more than 7,000 locations across 50 countries on all seven continents, and serves a combined 6 million members.
Runyon revolutionized the fitness industry in 2002, when he and David Mortensen co-founded Anytime Fitness. Today, with more than 5,000 franchise locations on all seven continents—more than half outside the U.S. in more than 30 countries—Anytime Fitness is the number one fitness franchise brand in the world. Runyon and Mortensen were named the 2020 Entrepreneurs of the Year by the International Franchise Association (IFA).
Runyon is a vocal advocate and lobbyist for fitness and global wellness. He sits on the CEO Council of the Health & Fitness Association and is active in both U.S. and global wellness policy efforts to aid small business franchising and wellness access.
He’s the co-author of Love Work: Inspire a High-Performing Work Culture at the Center of People, Purpose, Profits and Play®. He’s chair of the Runyon Family Foundation and a member of HeartFirst Charitable Foundation and the Hill Murray Foundation Board.
