Our Work

The National Health & Fitness Alliance is on the front lines working with Health & Fitness Association members, partners, and federations to secure the present and future success of the health and fitness industry.

Federal Advocacy

The National Health & Fitness Alliance works at the federal level to promote legislation that positions our industry as a critical component in the fight against obesity, chronic disease, and rising healthcare costs. We increase the voice of the industry by partnering with trusted organizations, shaping opinions through research, interviews, and commentary, and organizing for action by engaging everyone from industry professionals to consumers in support of our positions.

State Advocacy

Working in all 50 states to protect clubs from harmful policies, while promoting clubs as essential resources and partners in health. Our Government Relations team has its finger on the pulse of legislative and regulatory activity in every state. We focus on supporting positive policies and crushing legislation that’s harmful to the industry.

PAC

IHRSA PAC is a non-partisan Political Action Committee (PAC). IHRSA PAC is one of the most important tools we use to support pro-industry politicians, build relationships in Congress, and communicate the vital role that fitness businesses play to support healthy lifestyles and positive mental health; prevent, manage, and treat chronic disease; and create jobs in communities across the nation.

Project 435

The goal of Project 435 is to educate all 435 members of Congress about the important roles that health and fitness facilities play in the well-being of our nation, and the immense contribution our industry makes to local economies. The National Health & Fitness Alliance is working to enroll 435 passionate fitness professionals who will represent the fitness industry in their local Congressional District.

State Alliances

The importance of establishing relationships with local leaders can not be overstated. The Health & Fitness Association has been working with industry leaders in states across the country, providing them with tools to strengthen their voices at the local level to lobby individual governors and local lawmakers more directly.

PHIT

The Personal Health Investment Today (PHIT) Act will allow Americans to use pre-tax dollars—flexible spending accounts (FSAs) and health savings accounts (HSAs)—to pay for health club memberships, fitness equipment, exercise videos, and youth sports leagues. If passed, PHIT would enable individuals to use up to $1,000 per year—up to $2,000 for families—to cover physical activity-related expenses.

GYMS Act

While previous relief packages passed in Washington provided some assistance, the relief was not available to all health clubs. What was available was not nearly enough. The National Health & Fitness Alliance led a coordinated effort that marshaled hundreds of thousands of voices throughout our industry and encouraged hundreds of congressional representatives to sponsor the GYMS Act.
